I noticed in my compost some green onions I ate can regrow despite being used it the roots and part of the onion were in tact. I also saw plants I planted like my Russian Kale would sometimes flower, seed, and regrow each year. This is a fun and great way to grow things easy in pots with some soil for a season or year after year. Some plants even hold up well in the winter.
I decided to apply this same knowledge to other plants. I thought that maybe Butter/Boston or Living Lettuce would keep living because it would continue to grow in a plastic container. I replanted a stalk and roots recently and found it grew bigger than the container when left outside. I even cut off the top to create a sort of greenhouse effect giving the leaves some protection and moisture.
For my Wheat Grass I buy for our cats, when the grass looks like it is starting to lose its vitality, I planted them in a planter so it continued to grow and kept a living grass for our cats when they join us on our deck to create a sort of “Catio” experience for them. I also was able to get a bamboo bush they occaisionally eat off of. Keep in mind to get the proper bamboo for the conditions and not cut off leaves for them, as the plant could die.
Try some of these experiments at home, or even research how to grow things and watch your family have fun as they regrow and become connected to your own food without the high stress of a garden! Just remember to water the soil so the plants continue to grow!
